People are criticizing her because they say it goes against the anthem of “Born This Way”. But what about trans-gendered people who believe they were born in the wrong gender? They need surgery, sometimes cosmetic, in order to feel comfortable with themselves.

I think the criticizing is intentional. She’s challenging us to examine what kind of message we’re sending about cosmetic surgery in general. The widely-held assumption is that “plastic” surgery is for people who have low self-esteem or vain. But sometimes that is not the case.

And she said that she got it done because she was bored. I think it’s the first demonstration of her self-proclaimed “lack of maturity” she wants the next era to be about.
